I understand how overwhelming it can feel to move to a new country. When I moved to Australia in 2010, I brought a “can-do” attitude without fully grasping the challenges ahead. While I was eventually able to settle and become a citizen, I realize now there were many things I could have done to make the journey smoother and less stressful.

I’ve created this course, and the other AusReady courses, with the heartfelt hope that my experiences will guide you. I want to help you avoid unnecessary stress, feel more confident, and truly thrive in your new Australian life.

Expanded Founders Story - Why this course was created...

When I was a teenager, my family and my best friend’s family dreamed of moving to Australia together. Sadly, due to illness and the heartbreak it caused my grandparents—who couldn’t stand the thought of being left behind—we never followed through. Even so, the idea of living in Australia always stayed with me.

As I finished school and university, I set off to explore the world, hoping to find my own path. I spent six months on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) in Whistler, Canada, learning to adapt and earn my keep in a place where I knew very little and almost no one. After that, I backpacked through Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil, discovering how vast and inspiring the world could be. Then I moved to the UK, during the Global Financial Crisis, where I struggled to find stable work, learned to live on a tight budget, and did my best to stay hopeful. I lived in London for 18 months and work relocated me to Manchester. After a year, Manchester’s grey weather left me longing for sunshine. Remembering the welcoming nature of the Aussie friends I’d met in London, I decided it was finally time to head Down Under.

On my way to Australia, I traveled through Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam) for three months with two old schoolmates. Those months were lighthearted and carefree, giving me the kind of memories that warm your heart when things get tough. In October 2010, we landed on the Gold Coast in Australia, each holding a Working Holiday Visa and excited to explore. We planned to journey down the East Coast, learn about different cities, and discover where we might build a life. But money worries crept in, and I had to leave my friends behind to move faster. I hurried from Townsville to Brisbane, then Sydney, and on to Melbourne, where I found a place to stay with relatives. I ended up living in their garage and picking apples to qualify for a second Working Holiday Visa. It wasn’t glamorous, but it felt like a necessary step, and I tried to keep my spirits up.

During that time, I found an immigration agency online. They claimed I could go straight to Permanent Residency (PR) for $8,000 AUD. I was so hopeful and after double-checking my options and asking a lot of questions, I trusted their promises and paid the money. But once I handed over the fee, the story changed. Suddenly, PR wasn’t possible, and I’d need to apply for a different visa with more costs and longer wait times. When I asked for my money back, they said they’d only return half. Feeling pressured and upset—yet not fully aware of my rights—I stayed the course, hoping they’d follow through on their revised plan. Instead, the agency stopped responding entirely. Later, I received a legal letter indicating they had gone bankrupt and shut down. I lost every cent. It was crushing. Barely three months in Australia, and I’d already been scammed out of a large sum of money. It felt like a betrayal, and it made me question every decision I’d made so far.

Despite the huge stress this caused, I pushed forward. In Melbourne, I reconnected with friends I’d met in London, and through a stroke of good luck, I landed a small admin job. I slowly learned how things worked in Australia: the job market, the culture, the everyday small, important details that help you feel at home. But I still made mistakes—like applying too early for my second Working Holiday Visa and accidentally canceling the remaining time on the first. Had I known more about bridging visas, I could have saved precious months. These were the sorts of stumbles that felt frustrating and unnecessary, if only I’d had the right guidance.

Then, another twist of fate: the little company I worked for got acquired by a bigger one that could sponsor me for a Working Visa. I was thrilled, but it was still far from a smooth ride to Permanent Residency. Over the next four years, I navigated new jobs, different types of visas, and endless paperwork. I learned the hard way how complicated Australian immigration could be, how exhausting late-night research sessions felt, and how isolating it was to figure it all out on my own, while at the same time learning the nuances of Australian humour, ways of doing business, developing a network and creating friendship circles.

I’ve been through frustration, disappointment, financial losses, and waves of self-doubt. I know what it’s like to feel alone, fearful of the future, and uncertain in a foreign country you’re trying to call home. That’s exactly why I started the AusReady Academy.
